Leadership Reflections

"The tragedy of life is not that it ends so soon, but that we wait so long to begin it"

Core Services: Leadership through Life

Ages & Life Stages: Helping people make major transitions

In the same way that all good stories have a clear beginning, middle and end, it is often the case that a person's work path through life is made up of a number of cycles, each having a beginning, middle and end, the latter then being followed by the beginning of yet another cycle. Between the two cycles, one of life's frequent, occasionally frightening, personal transitions will need to take place. However, what what is rarely known is that the personal transitions themselves, the ones people make between jobs and careers; between companies and between life's ages and stages are themselves made up of a smaller, but nevertheless significant, psychological cycle. This universal cycle has three key elements as follows:

  1. Endings
  2. A Neutral Zone (a period of time when a perspn's perspective and behaviours really do start to change
  3. New Beginnings

Real change at a personal level will never really take place unless all of the three stages outlined above are consciously worked through by the individual concerned. Remember no matter how hard the transition may be or how hard it may seem, the team at Safe Leadership can help individuals successfully navigate these difficult, challenging yet often productive waters of transition.

Business benefits at generational boundaries - 'Why Generatio Y?': A free introductory presentation

Are you interested in improving innovation? Do you want to turn possible conflict into practical innovation? Do you want to make the most of everybody's abilities, no matter what age they are or what generation they belong to? If you want to achieve all of these things, then why not accept Safe Leadership's offer of a free introductory presentation looking at the passions and preferences that each and every generation brings to your workplace? Recent research shows that it is often at the boundaries between generations that creative and positive change can take place. However, the same research also shows that this only happens if the conditions are just right. Indeed, as we all know from our own everyday lives, whether at work or at home, these very same boundaries can produce deep-seated and often difficult to solve, long-term misunderstandings.

We also provide a number of very focused workshops which are highly tailored to meet clients' own particular generational needs. Co-designed with our customers, they aim to raise generational awareness; help teams work more effectively together; and ensure managers use the best-suited leadership styles to meet the development needs of a variety of generational groups. For all these services, please get in touch through enquiries@safeleadership.co.uk or call   +44 (0) 1225 400 268 and find out how you can book your free presentation.

Working with older employees

Building on our generational knowledge, we know that that there are a number of very good reasons for recruiting and retaining older employees (for our purposes, this means anyone working in the United Kingdom over 50 years of age). These include the following.

  • Businesses are beginning to appreciate the commercial benefits of taking on and holding on to older employees such as their increased productivity and loyalty to the business as well as their ability to help towards a solid reduction in recruitment, induction and training costs
  • In these particularly harsh economic times, businesses will still need people who have deep-seated and robust skills sets as well as strong experience and expertise in order that they are ready and willing to grow as the upturn takes place
  • Finally, older workers often have an untapped ability to train, coach and mentor younger workers. In industries such as carpentry and construction, areas of work which still tend to rely on tradition skills, this support can be particularly valuable.
