Leadership Reflections

"The strange way people evaluate risk sheds some light on why we often choose not to avoid danger. We tend to give our full attention to risks that are beyond our control (train smashes, air crashes, nuclear plant disaster, etc) while ignoring those we feel in charge of (dying from smoking, poor diet and accidents) even though the latter are far more likely to harm us."

Core Services: Safety Leadership Tools

Introduction: the Hogan SafeSystem*

At Safe Leadership we believe that all the leadership tools we recommend must be of the highest calibre. We are therefore delighted to devote this part of the website to the newly-released Hogan SafeSystem*. Hogan Assessments' in-depth research work has identified three key components that are critical to improving worker safety. These are:

  1. A culture where workers feel genuinely engaged in what they are doing
  2. The individual worker's own personality
  3. The leadership of the organisation

Before workplace safety can be improved, there must be genuine synergy between these three components. The Hogan SafeSystem* approach provides a number of robust and reliable tools to enable this to happen, these tools being based on the Hogan Personality Inventory one of the world's most well-respected personality questionnaires and available from Safe Leadership

Specific Hogan SafeSystem* Products & Services

1. The Hogan SafeSystem* Climate Survey
This provides feedback regarding the perceptions of safety
that people have at all levels of their organisation. Administered online, the survey is easy and convenient to use. Participants receive survey invitations electronically and log in to complete 40 safety-related questions. Taking roughly 15-20 minutes to complete, the data obtained gives customised Employee Safety Climate Reports as well as a company-wide, overall safety score.

2. The Hogan Safety Assessment (Safety Report)
The Hogan Safety Assessment helps organisations make better recruitment decisions for those people applying for safety-sensitive jobs. It also helps those same organisations explore in-depth the safety-related behaviour of their workers, identifying in detail their strengths and areas of concern. Using a 15 minute, 206 question assessment we examine each worker against the following safety competences:

 Compliant - high scorers are less likely to ignore company rules;
 Strong - high scorers are less likely to make mistakes under pressure;
 Cheerful  -  high scorers will display emotional control;
 Vigilant - high scorers are less likely to make mistakes whilst performing repetitive tasks;
 Cautious - high scorers will perform work carefully;
 Trainable - high scorers will show openness to being trained and developed

3. The Hogan SafeSystem* Coaching Process
The Hogan SafeSystem* Coaching Process gives employees the opportunity to strengthen their ability and willingness to build a safer environment both for
themselves and for their colleagues. The process gives individual workers, supervisors and managers (1) a developmentally-focused Safety Report; (2) a set of safety strengths; (3) personal development areas and (4) detailed feedback material for use in the creation of Safety Performance Improvement Plans

Benefits

Firstly, by focusing on organisational leadership, we can create and maintain a holistic safety environment making sure that leaders know what workers' safety perceptions are at all levels. Secondly, by focusing on developing cultures and climates of worker engagement through the SafeSystem* Climate Survey, we can involve workers in the creation of a safety culture ensuring that leaders are aware of the real safety issues and that everyone is a member of a safety team encompassing the whole organisation. Thirdly, by focusing on worker personality and by using the Hogan Safety Assessment tool we can quantify safe and unsafe worker behaviour as well as identifying work-safety risk.
